1. What materials are used in the acoustic art pieces?
The textile surface is constructed from fibers, primarily 100% merino wool, Lyocell, or combinations of different yarns. A detailed material specification is provided individually for each artwork. The frames are crafted from solid ash wood, and the internal acoustic board is made of polyester, containing at least 50% (typically 60–70%) recycled materials. We do not use printing; every visual pattern and texture is physically built stitch by stitch.
2. How do these textile pieces function as acoustic panels?
The knit structure is designed to let sound waves pass through it. Behind the textile surface is an acoustic board specifically manufactured for sound absorption, followed by a small air gap before the wall. Together, these layers efficiently absorb sound waves, reducing echo and softening the acoustics of spaces with hard surfaces, such as stone, glass, or concrete.
3. Are these art pieces unique or mass-produced?
The collection pieces are unique originals. For custom commissions based on your own photograph, you retain the copyright to the image you provide. You also decide whether we knit only a single piece or a specific, limited number of copies for your own use. The design will not be added to our public catalog without your permission.
4. How does the custom commission process work, and what is the risk?
The digital design and the preview of your image are completely free of charge. After completing the digital plan, we provide you with the final price for the finished piece. Payment is required before production begins.
If the final physical artwork does not meet your expectations upon delivery, you can return it, and we will refund the full amount you paid. In case of a return, we will destroy the piece unless you choose to assign the copyright to us. If we agree on a price, we may purchase the piece from you for our own collection or for public resale.
5. Where do you deliver?
Operating from Finland, we offer international shipping to private collectors, architects, and interior designers worldwide, with a primary focus on Europe and the United States.
6. Who is the manufacturer behind ArtKnitting?
ArtKnitting is the art division of Tuoriniemi Dream Oy (originally established as Tuoriniemi Ky in 1980). For 45 years, our family-owned studio in Finland has mastered industrial knitting machinery and material structures. In the 1980s and 1990s, we specialized in programming complex patterns and manufacturing collections for leading design houses, including Marimekko, Annikki Karvinen, Marja Kurki, and Anne Linnonmaa.
For the past 26 years, we have focused strictly on the stabilizing and manufacturing of premium Merino wool and Lyocell structures. In 2018 and 2019, our technical programming expertise was trusted by Finland’s largest national newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat, to knit their high-profile ‘Ruma Totuus’ (The Ugly Truth) merino journalism campaign. Today, we apply this exact, unbroken industrial programming heritage to create structural, acoustic art for modern walls.
